Opere al 1° piano del Palazzo Comunale

1. Crucifixion

Oil on canvas, cm. 238×200 – 17th century

Attributed to Maniera del Giusti – Ammaini said “il Francesino”

From the Convent of La Maddalena in Sant’Albino (Cappuccini)

Canvas painted with life-size figures. Jesus is crucified, at the foot of the cross stands kneeling Mary Magdalene, standing Saint Francis. On the sides there are Mary, Mother of Jesus and Saint John the Evangelist, the favorite disciple of Jesus. At the top two flying angels with a chalice in hand, who collect the precious divine blood, pledge of salvation for Humanity.

The presence of the Saint wants to highlight his mystical communion with Jesus at the moment of the redemptive Passion and with other important figures in the history of salvation according to the Catholic faith, and is obviously explainable with the Franciscan committenza.

Francesco Brogi, Inventario Generale degli oggetti d’arte della provincia di Siena (1862-1865), Siena, 1897, p. 328

2. Stick holders and umbrellas with numbering

Walnut wood – 19th century

From Central Italy

Unusual and rare wooden furniture in walnut wood, probably used as walking stick holders and umbrella: in fact in the rack there are many small numbered holes (for sticks) and large (for umbrellas) that allow to deposit the object and retrieve it with ease before leaving the building.
