Montepulciano is confirmed Sustainable Tourist Destination
Montepulciano is also this year among the excellence of sustainable tourism at an international level.
The city has been confirmed the certification of Sustainable Tourism Destination, issued according to the criteria of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), thus maintaining the first Italian city of small and medium size to receive this important recognition.
Montepulciano had obtained this first recognition in February 2024. The certification, which lasts three years, includes annual interim audits to monitor compliance with sustainability standards, based on four pillars: sustainable management of the destination, socio-economic sustainability, cultural and environmental sustainability.
The confirmation came at the end of an in-depth audit carried out in March by Vireo Srl, a body accredited by the GSTC, an international institution born on the push of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which examined various aspects of the organization and management of tourism in the area. The certifiers visited the municipal territory, met with some private operators of the reception and interviewed the staff of the Administration, to assess the effective application of the sustainability principles provided for by the standard.
This is an important result, welcomed with satisfaction, considered not as a point of arrival, but as a means to continue and improve on the path towards an increasingly responsible tourism, respectful of the territory and communities.
