Reopened the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Montepulciano

After four years of works, on 11 July 2026 the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Montepulciano was finally reopened for worship and returned to the community.

The intervention initially focused on the repainting and plastering of the surfaces, including those of the dome and the pillars. Subsequently, work proceeded on the liturgical renovation, which was carried out with the aim of making the assembly active and participatory, by designing the liturgical focal points (altar, ambo, and celebrant’s chair) close to it, while also linking the design to the Marian theme of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven, to which the Cathedral is dedicated, emphasizing how the Assumption represents the mystery of Mary’s participation, as Mother of God, in the Glory of her Son Jesus Christ.

The other major restoration work concerned, finally, the Triptych of the Assumption, a masterpiece by Taddeo di Bartolo completed in 1401 and originally placed on the high altar of the ancient parish church of Santa Maria. Work on this artwork lasted several years and was also completed this year. At the same time, other works within the church were restored as well, both paintings and furnishings. Behind the austere and unfinished brick façade of the Cathedral of Montepulciano, in fact, lies a treasure trove of unexpected beauty. Entering the Duomo of Montepulciano means embarking on a journey into the heart of the Tuscan Renaissance, where the solemnity of the architecture merges with the Faith of a community and the magnificence of its works of art.

On weekdays and holidays, the Cathedral is open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Starting in August 2026, the Eucharist will be celebrated every Sunday, as well as on the main solemnities: Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost.
